Big Foot Sightings in India

By Debra Myers     Jun 13, 2007 in Science
In India's remote northeast, there have been sightings of big foot-type creatures which have the local villagers scared. This past month in particular, there have been enough sightings that the authorities have begun an investigation into the matter.
We've all heard of them before...the North American 'Big foot' or 'Sasquatch', the Australian 'Yowie', and the Himalayan 'Yeti'...mysterious creatures that can occasionally be seen, but never found. The big question still remains: are they real?

The newest wave of these sightings have taken place in the Garo hills of state of Meghalaya, an area that borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan. The villagers here have named these creatures "Mande Burung"...Jungle Man.
Wallen Sangma, 40, a local farmer said that he has seen a whole family of them. 'The sight was frightening: two adults and two smaller ones, huge and bulky, furry,' he told an AFP reporter who visited the remote area on Thursday and Friday. 'Their heads looked as if they were wearing caps, and their colour was blackish-brown,' he said, adding the four "monsters" were about 30 to 40 metres (100 to 130 feet) away from him as he looked for firewood in a forested area." He added that they slipped quietly away into the brush.
A team of wildlife specialists and experts have been called in to find out if there is any truth to these sightings. A tourist group there says they've been trying to verify these creature's existence for 10 years, that they have photographs of footprints and 'nests', and that they even have a hair sample. The hair sample is being sent for DNA testing.
I think it would be something if they could find that these creatures do exist! We had a sighting here in the WNY area, back many years ago, and there was even a sample of hair found that was sent off to be tested. That was the end of the news coverage...we never did hear what the results of the hair testing were, though.
My own curiosity still remains...
