By Chris V. Thangham     Jun 12, 2007 in Internet
GMail adds another feature today, we can preview PowerPoint file attachment online. Can be viewed as an HTML or as a slide show. Google will add the editing the PowerPoint Files options soon.
GMail rolled to everyone a new feature that lets you preview PowerPoint attachments.
Google acquired Presently recently, which is an online PowerPoint application, along with other startups it purchases frequently. Most of them are geared towards Office like applications. It has already many of the major programs in Google Apps.
With GMail, one can receive a variety of documents online shown in the below table, and most of them can not only be seen but also allows editing via its Google Docs & Spreadsheets online program. Till now the only document type wasn’t available in this list was PowerPoint files. But now, GMail allows the users to see the PowerPoint file in a HTML format or as a Slideshow or save the PowerPoint file. So, for every PowerPoint attached file, you will have these three options. It doesn’t allow editing the PowerPoint file yet, but soon that option will be available also.
Here's a list of the most important file formats handled by GMail (simplified view usually means "view as HTML"):
From the above list you can see any type of file can be seen directly from GMail, no need of any external programs is necessary. This will come in handy when you are away from your main desktop.
Soon, Google will have online hard drive, where you can store all your documents, access it, edit it and share it from one place. I use it very frequently, became tired of losing data and incessant windows crashing. Only problem I have is the size limit of the individual file stored online, it is only 500MB. If they increase that option, then it will be wonderful.
If your company, client or coworker sends a PowerPoint file in an e-mail, then you can use GMail to see its contents quickly online.
