The U.S. Admits It's Now Arming Sunni Insurgents

By Oliver VanDervoort     Jun 11, 2007 in World
Caught in a bad sitcom plot, the Pentagon today admitted they are now arming the soldiers we've been fighting for the last 3 years, in hopes that they will turn on their Al-Qaeda brethren
But officials Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki’s government has placed strict limits on the Sunni groups they are willing to recognize as allies in the fight against Al Qaeda.
I guess it's good someone is willing to put a limit on this nonsense, but I can't believe the troops on the ground are thrilled to hear that the same people they've been called in to kill or capture are being allowed access to the same technological advances that made us a more efficient army.
American officers acknowledge that providing weapons to rebel groups is not new in counterinsurgency warfare, and that in places where it has been tried before, including the French colonial war in Algeria, the British-led fight against insurgents in Malaya in the early 1950s, and in Vietnam, the effort often backfired, with weapons given to the rebels being turned against the forces providing them.
But apparently this is the plan B that the GOP,and the Bush administration had hinted at that was supposed to win this war. There have been promises that no groups that have attacked Americans will be provided weapons, but it was not made clear how the US was going to be able to guarantee that promise. This is the same administration that a limited understanding of the differences between Sunnis, and Shiites, and has imprisoned many innocent Iraqis, and had to release them later, but we're supposed to believe that now they can guarantee that the arms won't fall into the hands of our enemies?
This appears to be yet another colossally bad plan, in a long line of colossally bad plans
