According to the scientists studying imagery taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a very dark spot on Mars could be an entrance to a very deep hole or cavern. The hole is located to the Northeast of Arsia Mons.
The "hole" is approximately 300 feet (100 meters) long and is located on one of the four giant volcanoes on the red planet.
Researchers have already begun speculating what this hole might be useful for: either it already supports life or it can support future astronauts who decide to go on Mars and stay there to further investigate.
Scientists are in no doubt that the hole is deep. Since the Orbiter used its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment instrument, they were able to draw a bead on the apparently very deep hole. They have already ruled out that this hole was created as a consequence of a meteorite hitting Mars's surface. No walls can be seen which led scientists to believe that the walls must be completely vertical.
Alfred McEwen is HiRISE principle investigator.
"We especially want oblique images from the west, to see illuminated walls. These are deep holes with overhanging walls, but perhaps not long caves," McEwen told SPACE.com.
According to Peter Smith, who is a principal investigator for NASA's Phoenix lander, the deeper we go down on Mars, the warmer it gets. So, you would basically go deeper and deeper and at some point you would reach liquid because conditions are good for ice to melt.
Moreover, the caves can possibly be linked to underground fractures which allows the water vapour to be trapped inside. This could possibly cause environmentally friendly air for creatures to exist.
To add onto this, scientists believe that these "caves" could suit as a protection housing against high radiation environment on Mars.
I do not know the exact number of caves or holes scientists have found on Mars but since I have been following this investigation for a while now, I can tell you that Mars has many, many new holes or caves. I guess the new revolution in technology allowed us to come a little bit closer to finding out the truth about Mars and space in general. Many people say that we are alone in this universe, but this makes me skeptical because if we look at the span of the universe, we would realize that there is a possibility that somewhere, far away from here, where time vanishes, space becomes infinite and where Scwarzschild singularity exists, new world, different world exists.
