Remember how we were told to 'flush' our unused medication down the toilet, instead of throwing it in the garbage? And now we're being told not to flush it. Here's one reason why...
Scientists in Sarasota, FL have found traces of drugs in the blood of bull sharks. Believe it or not, the kinds of drugs found have been:
"Prozac and Zoloft, cholesterol-reducing drugs like Lipitor, and synthetic estrogen."
The scientists believe that this contamination in the Caloosahatchee River, has been the result of medications being flushed, going through the sewer systems and finally ending up in the bull sharks bellies.
Bull sharks spend most of their first year in rivers before they venture into the open ocean. Scientists are afraid that because of these drugs, the sharks are not going to be able to reproduce. Bull shark's numbers have been on a steady decline since the 1970s.
Talk about having some happy, even-tempered sharks! One of the side-effects of antidepressants is a lowered sex drive...in humans, that is. I wonder if it might work this way in sharks too?
