She Spent The $2.5 Million She Got In The Mail - Now She's Sitting In Jail

By Pamela Jean     May 31, 2007 in Crime
Imagining getting a $2.5 million dollar check in the mail from your home state. What would you do? Well, Sabrina Walker decided to spend it! She set up a retirement account, bought jewelry and electronics and bought a $500,000 CD. She is now in jail....
The City of Minneapolis made a big "boo boo" when they accidentally mailed a $2.5 million dollar check to a Ms. Sabrina Walker, age 37, which was intended to go to the Hennepin County Medical Center.
Seems Ms. Walker was in the computer system for having been paid $84.00 as a court witness. Investigation of the mishap disclosed that Ms. Walker's vendor number was only one digit off from that assigned to the medical center.
So, what does one do when they open thier mail and discover a check from the State in the amount of $2.5 million you ask? Well, in the case of Ms. Walker you spend it!
Walker, along with a man she lived with, allegedly bought a $500,000 certificate of deposit, funded two retirement accounts, bought a $500,000 Treasury bond, spent $5,500 on jewelry, $3,817 at Best Buy and $2,069 on limousine services, according to the criminal complaint.
Walker also allegedly bought two cars, called the state to report the check, then bought two more cars, prosecutors said.
Employed as a school counselor, Ms. Walker has been placed on leave until her case is settled.
Her criminal attorney, Mark Larsen, said there was more to the story than just the criminal complaint submitted by prosecutors. The complaint "fails to recite all the pertinent facts," he said.
"This is a far cry from an individual who is turning her back on what has happened here," he said.
The Department Of Human Services in Minneapolis has been successful in freezing Ms. Walker's bank accounts.
It is further reported that they are working at improving the internal controls on manual payments.
Geez. Poor Sabrina! I can't imagine what it would be like to get a check like that in the mail. Who among us wouldn't be hugely tempted to just cash that baby and see where the chips fell?? I hope she can just sell her stuff and give the money back. It just seems like too much temptation for any mere mortal to bear..............
