The National Spelling Bee underway, it is amazing to watch these youngsters spell words that are hard to even pronounce. The spelling bee seems to have made a come back and provide hours of entertainment
When I was younger the spelling bee's were part of a weekly ritual that took place every Friday for the duration of my elementary years, starting in the first grade. The last while it seemed that the spelling bee has not been as popular, even at a district level.
This isn't the case this year with the 80th National Scripps Spelling Bee being televised and blogged about as the contestants spell their way up to the winning circle. After watching some of the televised coverage this morning I was surprised how entertaining it was. The kids that are in the contest have a calm, cool look on the outside but the pressure is intense to spell words that I have never even heard of.
The words range from the simple to the absurd, which one of the contestants asking if the word was even an english word - who could blame him, the word was "ptilopod.".
If it seems too pure of heart for you, it isn't all what it appears and the internet has places where you can place your bets for who you think will win this competition.
It is well worth taking the time to see these young spelling bees spell their way along.
