Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, 35, and her husband, Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani, 51 will be allowed to post a $3.5 million dollars bail but they do have conditions attached. They are accused of keeping two Indonesian woman as slaves.
Conditions placed on their release include home detention, telephone wiretaps and surveillance 24-hours a day.
The charges that have been brought against the couple are two counts of forced labor and two counts of harboring illegal residents. They deny these charges.
Are these the only charges they will face? is forced labor the same thing as slavery? And the charge of harboring illegals makes it sound as though these women were in hiding in the home willingly and not brought and kept their under false pretenses and abused and threatened.
No mention of abuse or holding someone against their will have been mentioned though and they were accused of those offenses also.
Documents from the son of one of the victims was submitted in court say that so far threats and bribery has been tried on him and other members of the victims families.
He said he was told by Varsha Sabhnani's mother that if she left it would be a "breach of contract," and that the woman also told him, "Don't ask too much. I can kill your mother," according to the statement.
These accusations are being denied also.
So it remains to be seen if the couple will stay and face these charges or if they will use the resources they have to leave the country.
