Environmentally Hazardous Boat Shrink Wrap Can Be Recycled Now

By Laura Trowbridge     May 29, 2007 in Environment
It's boating season! Here in the Great Lakes State of Michigan we are ripping off that shrink wrap from our boats and sending it to the landfills where it is an environmental hazard because this polyethylene never deteriorates.
Mondo Polymer Technologies of Ohio is coming to Michigan to pick up our discarded shrink wrap. They have found a way to make great products by recycling this non-biodegradable material.
There are 65 Michigan marinas that are participating in the recycling pilot program this year. It is expected there will be 200,000 pounds of shrink wrap that MPT will be picking up in South East Michigan, free of charge, to be recycled and used in their molds to create safety equipment for the highway and transportation industries.
By next year MPT is planning on getting the entire state of Michigan to go green and get this shrink wrap out of the landfills where it pollutes the environment. There are a million registered boat owners in the state of Michigan.
