A 71 year old retired schoolteacher from Japan is the oldest to scale Mount Everest. Katsusuke Yanagisawa reached the top of the oldest highest mountain on May 22.
Katsusuke Yanagisawa was with a group from New Zealand and Japan.
The Japanese are renowned for their longevity. There is a trend in the senior citizen group of taking on more physical challenges such as the scaling of Mt. Everest.
"I was pretty much at ease mentally at the summit, like I could sing a song," he told Japan's national broadcaster NHK from his hotel in Kathmandu.
