article imageBuffalo Man Pleads Guilty

By Debra Myers     May 16, 2007 in Crime
Buffalo, NY-- Altemio Sanchez, 49, called the "Bike Path Rapist", pleaded guilty today for the murders of 3 women since 1990. 2 of these women were found on bike paths.
Here we have a man, who was loving to his family and friends, threw neighborhood parties, and took great care with his lawn and flower beds. Even now, Sanchez's family and acquaintances feel that the police have the wrong man. The DNA evidence proves otherwise.
Linda Yelum, a University of Buffalo student was found raped and strangled on a bike path in 1990. Two years later, Majane Mazur was found raped and strangled on a Buffalo street. Last year, Joan Diver was found on Sept. 29th, strangled on another bike path.
Yet there's more. The police have also tied him to 8 or 9 more rapes, and suspect him in at least a dozen more, dating back into the 1970s.
The sad part is that another man spent 22 years in prison for a crime he truly did not commit, 2 rapes, that DNA finally connected Sanchez too! Anthony Capozzi's convictions were erased last month.
Sanchez will be sentenced August 2nd, and he faces 75 years to life. If they had not caught this man, who's to say that he very well could have continued being a serial rapist.
I am glad this man is off the street permanently. I feel bad for his family, because he lied to them in the worse possible way. They never knew the man he really is.
