Law & Order Star Leaving Show to Run for President?

By paigemom     May 14, 2007 in Politics
Fred Thompson who plays the lovable curmudgeon DA Arthur Branch on NBC's "Law & Order" is leaving the show after this season.
Question: is Thompson leaving in order to try to give himself a promotion, from actor playing a DA to...President of the United States?
Answer: no one knows for sure, but the evidence points to a bid for nomination as the Republican presidential candidate. Apparently the former senator from Tennessee has made several speaking appearances and is also blogging on issues in recent weeks as he considers a candidacy.
NBC recently renewed the series for an 18th season. New episodes won't appear until January -- after NBC's Sunday-night football series ends.
Even if Thompson were to decide against a candidacy and wanted to stay on "Law & Order," the timing may be tough. Many television series, including "Law & Order," will be going into production earlier than usual in coming months to stockpile episodes in the event of a strike by writers later this fall.
I would hate to see him go. I'm a long-time fan of the show, and he's my favorite DA of all.
