SYDNEY: An antimicrobial compound produced in wallaby milk could be a new weapon in the continuing battle against antibiotic-resistant superbugs, say researchers conducting pre-clinical trials.
So, first it is lizard-spit to help cure diabetes and now wallaby milk as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Nifty!
Alas, this research is only "pre-clinical," which means it will be quite a while before staph infections are treated with twenty cc's of wallaby milk, but the science is exciting none the less.
If their guess that the active ingredient actually attacks the bacteria's membrane turns out to be correct, it could open up a whole host of new treatments.
