Vegan Parents Get Life in Prison for Death of Son

A 6-week-old baby died of starvation after being fed a diet of mostly soy milk and apple juice by his vegan parents. Today his parents were sentenced to life in prison.
Last week, Lamont Thomas, 31 and Jade Sanders, 27, were found guilty of malice murder, child cruelty and other charges that related to the death of their son, Crown Shakur.

A jury deliberated for seven hours before bringing back the verdict.

Under a Georgia State Law that requires life in prison for anyone convicted of malice murder, Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell sentenced the couple to just that today.

The couple's defense attorneys argued that they did not mean to harm the child . He said that Thomas and Sanders believed their son Crown, who at the time he died in April of 2004 weighed only 3-1/2 pounds, had lost weight because he was being fed a diet of mostly soy milk, organic apple juice, and breast milk.

Crown Shakur
Sanders said that she would never intentionally have hurt her baby. "Not once was I asked if I loved my son," Sanders said. "I'm not a number. I'm a person. I loved my son and I did not starve him."

Sanders and Thomas are both vegans, meaning they eat no animal products. However, prosecutors argued that the couple's diet wasn't at issue - it was their treatment of Crown that led to the baby's death.

The jury, who had four vegetarians on it, were convinced by the prosecution that the couple intentionally neglected and did not feed their child. The jury was told that Crown was born in at home in a bathtub. The couple's apartment is just across the street from a hospital and the boy never received professional medical care. Fulton prosecutor Chuck Boring said: "No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians', that's not the issue in this case. The child died because he was not fed. Period."

Lamont Thomas and Jade Sanders
During his closing arguments, Fulton prosecutor Mike Carlson told the jury: "They're not vegans, they're baby killers."

There is no mention of what this baby's size or weight were when he was born but surely, any rational, sane person would realize that when their baby weighs 3 and one half pounds, there is something serious wrong.

You beat me to it, I was doing the same story. Went and found some pictures of the baby and the couple if you want them for your story.

I cannot believe they did not know their child was ill or starving. He was just 3 1/2 pounds when he died.
Their cupboards were also empty when the child died as well.
starvation is very painful. They had to know something was wrong.

the problem with far too many vegetarians and vegans is they lack a proper understanding of nutrition. This could fall into that category with tragic results. Some basic research would have saved them all this heartache.

I can't possibly believe that a parent could watch their child whither away to 3.5 pounds and that it never dawned on them that they were starving the poor child.
This story breaks my heart. Where were the grandparents? The pediatrician? Who were these parents that they would inflict their belief system of vegan-ism on a helpless infant and not consider the best interests of the child??
These people were totally indefensible, in my opinion, and it is good that they were found guilty of murdering this baby. Unless they were somehow mentally deficient themselves, common sense should have kicked in before it got to the point that the baby died, for God's sake!!

Something is not adding up. The mother did feed the child breast milk which by definition is not on the vegan diet. But breast milk is all an infant needs. For some reason the parents chose not to use milk free infant formula. What type of prenatal care did the mother receive? Was this their first child? What type of childcare classes did the parents receive? Even when there is a home birth a birth certificate is filed and certain test are mandated by state law. This case should be appealed it might be reasonable to prevent the parents from ever having any more children, but a life sentence is a waste of taxpayer money! The state bares some responsibility in not following up on the birth and checking in to see if the baby was doing well. The parent are guilty of negligent childcare and maybe even stupidity but not murder by malice. The were feeding the child something but just not feeding enough or the right kinds of nourishment. The prosecutor has his trophy pelt but what does society have? The cost of keep two poorly informed individuals in prison for years!

Did they actually starve the baby? Or was what they were feeding him so devoid of nutrients that his body processed it without gleaning any benefit?

It is so sad this happens. I do beleive that these people were innocent of know they were doing wrong though. I am not trying to sound ignorant here, but the human mind needs animal protiens to work at top capacity. Otherwise the mind seems to work at a more simple rate.

The baby was born at home. Never had a doctor.

How sad. My guess too is that these parents had no understanding of nutritional values, but I can't believe for one minute that they were unaware their baby was being starved to death. That poor little baby had to have been fussy from hunger...what did they do about it, I wonder?

Sanders said that she would never intentionally have hurt her baby. "Not once was I asked if I loved my son," Sanders said. "I'm not a number. I'm a person. I loved my son and I did not starve him." The mother doesn't get it, anyone will realize the baby is thin for its age. If the baby was alive it seems she would have stayed with this diet, while they will be filling their stomachs well. It doesn't matter what belief they follow, can still feed natural stuff to the baby. Can't believe her friends or family didn't say anything to control this. I think the Government should focus more on Pre and post natal care, they can have educational videos and make both the parents watch when they visit doctors.

Up to the age of four to six months, the diets of many infants of vegan and of non-vegan parents are identical. The perfect food for the young infant is breast milk and supplementary foods should not be introduced until after four to six months of age.

One of the prosecutors said that the boy's death had nothing to do with the parents ignorance about taking care of a baby. He said "The child died because he was not fed." I think that says it all.

Pictures of the family are courtsey of Brandigal. Thanks so much.

Some people are just very stupid. The question is do we imprison people for life for being very stupid?
The prisons would be crammed and the streets would be deserted.

I do not think they were merely stupid. This child died a very painful and prolonged death. Starvation is very painful. They had to have known something was wrong. The child would have been crying. You could see a child is not well at 3 and half pounds. That is not just a case of parents being stupid.
"The child died because he was not fed." I think that says it all.
I agree. If they could not care for the child or give the child what was needed to survive, they should have sought help.

You know, if your kid is dying, maybe it's time to chuck your morality about food and eat a burger. If your breast milk is lacking the nutrients your baby needs because you don't want to hurt the fuzzy animals, then you should do the gene pool a favor and starve as well.

I have no sympathy for these parents. If you see your kid withering to 3.5lbs, you have to know something is up and start making some decisions. At least take the kid to a fucking doctor. Morons.

We don't imprison people for allowing their babies to have their arms and legs ripped off and their skull drilled into and their brain sucked out when they are anything up to 9 months gestation.

Abortion does give an interesting spin on morality.
