Yes, you could do time for what you think. A bill just passed by Congress makes it a crime to THINK.
HR 1592, which is supposedly a "hate crime" bill makes it a criminal act to merely think bad thoughts.
Under the provisions of this bill you can do extra time, over and above time for the actual crime, if you were THINKING bad thoughts at the time you did the deed.
For example, if you punch someone that's battery and you could get, let's say a year in jail. But if you were THINKING something bad about the person you hit because of his race or sexual orientation, etc. those bad thoughts could get you an extra sentence on top of the time for the punch. If you murder someone and get 20 years, you could get another 5 or 10 years if you "hated" the person you murdered. What?
Yes, now the government will have to look inside your head to see what you were thinking when you commited your particular crime. If you like the person you kill, you'll get a lighter sentence, but if you hate the person you kill, well then, brother you are in trouble.
How dumb can Congress get?
Yes, I know, Congress wanted to address the problem of crimes based on prejudice over issues like race, creed, sexual orientation, etc. But as usual, Congress just doesn't understand what it is doing.
As Robert A. Heinlein pointed out, Congress is a committee, and a "committee is an organism with 6 or more legs and no brain."
