article imageUpdate To MI. High School Lockdown

By Laura Trowbridge     May 3, 2007 in Health
More information is available now from the story I did earlier today on the high school in Michigan that is on lockdown for a mercury spill.
A teacher said a broken kitchen thermometer was noticed lying near the cafeteria this afternoon about 12:00 PM.
Police, firemen and North Oakland County Hazardous Materials team arrived at the school after the spill was reported.
Some of the students are testing positive for mercury exposure. The students who were in the cafeteria are being kept there until they go through the decontamination process.
One of the students told of his experience. "We had to take off our shoes but weren't allowed to touch them with our hands; we had to remove them with our feet," sophomore Matthew Rall said. "We stuck them in a bag, and they had us wait on the bleachers. They had me wait for about 15 minutes, and then they came back with my shoes and told me I could go home."
