The US FDA today warned that the use of antidepressants in young adults can cause the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviour. This chilling news replaces the older warning for children and teen usage. The age goes to 24 on the warning labels.
The risks to young people have been well documented over the past few years, but the added age to 24 could change the way the medicine is prescribed.
Companies have a month to change their information packages to include this warning.
In Canada, warnings on antidepressants already indicate that patients of all ages taking them may experience behavioural and-or emotional changes that may put them at increased risk of self-harm or harm to others.
