California Freeway Collapses

By Mark M Drewe     Apr 29, 2007 in Travel
A section of the California Freeway close to the Bay Bridge, has collapsed under a fire...
This is hard to even imagine: A tanker crashes on the freeway, and bursts into flames - the flames got so hot it actually melted the upraised section of the freeway and it collapsed.
This will be a huge disruption in the traffic around there, which is the busiest freeway in the United States. Even worse is where the crash happened (3 freeway convergents). Just take a look:
Nearly 75,000 vehicles use the portion of the road every day. But because the accident occurred where three highways converge, authorities said it could cause commuting problems for hundreds of thousands of people. State transportation officials said 280,000 commuters take the bridge into San Francisco each day.
The repairs are estimated to take a few months, making this disruption the worst since the 1989 San Fran earthquake that took down some of the Bay Bridge itself. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will likely declare and emergency situation so the repairs can happen faster.
But there's some good news to this. Despite the flames reaching up to 200 feet in the air, nobody was killed.
