article imageBanned: Western Hairstyles, Eyebrow Plucking, and Make Up for Men in Iran

By S.H. Mills     Apr 29, 2007 in Lifestyle
Recently, strict rules were put in place for women’s apparel. There's no indication if men will be subject to fines, lashings, incarceration, the way women are for violating new codes regarding appearance.
Police have ordered barbers to stop performing Western haircuts, “doing eyebrows,” and applying make up for male customers under threat of prosecution. Barbers helping men achieve a western look may find their businesses closed down for a month or their operating licenses revoked entirely.
This should go over well with those who voted for stringent control over what is deemed “immoral behavior” but will certainly be less popular with younger, more moderate citizens.
Signs bearing images of some of the banned items are displayed in public areas. These signs serve as a reminder of the national bans against European and American styles of hair and dress, and reminding citizens that the authorities take the effort to put an end to these things seriously.
