article imageMan Who Tried Suicide By Burning Himself Alive May Be Charged With Arson

By Bob Norman     Apr 25, 2007 in Crime
If you're so depressed that you try suicide by setting yourself on fire, will it really help the situation if you're charged with arson when you survive?
Haouy Nguyen wanted to die. He entered the Long Beach California City Hall, doused himself with gasoline, and set himself ablaze. Quick actions by a security guard put out the flames and saved Nguyen's life but, his troubles may have gotten even worse. The local Police and Fire departments are expected to ask prosecutors to bring arson charges against the suicidal man.
“He made the statement ‘I want to die,’ which makes us think the motive was probably suicide,”said Nancy Pratt, a Long Beach police spokeswoman.
Nguyen was taken to the Los Angeles County-USC burn center with first-, second- and third-degree burns. He is expected to face charges of attempted arson and arson with great bodily injury.
Instead of punishing this poor man why don't they get him some help instead? This seems like a waste of time for the Police and Fire departments since it's obvious he wasn't in his right mind and therefore, not responsible for his actions. Put him in a hospital until he's no longer a threat to himself but, don't lock him in a prison where he'll find a way to finish the job!
