By Kyle Pallanik     Apr 13, 2007 in Entertainment
Jackie Chan and Jet Li will star together in an upcoming movie called 'Forbidden Kingdom', a story about an American teenager's fantasy journey to ancient China to rescue the mythological Monkey King.
The kung fu film has the drawn the attention of the genre's fans once it became known that the two major stars would be in the film.
Not many details about the plot are known at this time, but the idea originates from a classic Chinese story, known as 'Journey to the West' in which a legendary monkey king, a big and a friar help guard a Buddhist monk who is searching for religious texts.
In a news release, the U.S. distributor Lionsgate said that "'The Forbidden Kingdom' is set in ancient China and follows an American teenager's attempt to help rescue the monkey king from captors."
Jackie Chan spoke to reporters in Hong Kong about the movie giving the impression that Hollywood producers were adding their commercial twist to the project "I don't have any expectations. It's just making an American movie"
Apparently the movie has an American teenage fan of kung fu movies, travel back in time after discovering a magical artifact, the monkey king's stick weapon, in an Chinatown pawn shop.
Jet Li is cast as both the Monkey King and a silent monk, while Jackie Chan will play the monk T'sa-Ho.
The 'Forbidden Kingdom' movie will begin filming in early May near Shanghai, in Hengdian city's movie studios. The movie is financed by Relativity Media, a Los Angeles-based production company with a possible budget of $80 million. The distributor Lionsgate expects to release the movie in mid 2008, probably around the time of the summer Olympics.
The film could offer a sharp contrast of fighting styles. Chan is known for his improvisational, defensive moves, while Li tends to dominate his on-screen opponents.
Coreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who is famous for his work in the 'Matrix' trilogy will design the action sequences for the movie. Rob Minkoff will direct the movie, but his credits include mostly animated movies, such as 'The Lion King' and 'Stuart Little' movies.
