article imageDuke Lacross Team Cleared of all Rape Charges - Should Black Community Apologize

By myobservations     Apr 11, 2007 in Crime
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper has just announced that all rape and assault charges have been dropped against the three Duke University lacrosse players.
According to the attorney general's office, evidential information gathered to date shows that there is insufficient evidence to proceed on any of the charges. The charges against the 3 young men have been formally dismissed.
I am a Black man who is indignant at the obvious miscarriage of justice that has been perpetrated against these young men. It was obvious from the start that the young lady who charged the lacross players with rape was telling a complete lie. Her partner told authorities that she observed no misconduct by the team players. Those leaders in the Black community of Durham, who unjustifiably accused and demonstrated against these young men on charges of rape, should issue an apology. This would be a positive action for improved relations between the Blacks and Whites in the Durham area; and in my opinion would reflect well on the character of the Black community.
It is reported that Mike Nigong, the DA who initiated these bogus charges against Duke Lacross players Reade Seligmann, Dave Evans and Collin Finnerty is immune from all subsequent law suits that may be filed against him by these players. This I feel is a travesty of justice; and the veil of protection provided Nifong should be removed. It is my further opinion that Nifong should be disbarred. For the past 13 months Reade Seligmann, Dave Evans and Collin Finnerty have suffered greatly.
It has since been reported that the exotic dancer who made the charges has made similar charges to the police in the past.
