An animal rights group has spent nearly $3400 to purchase 300 lobsters in an attempt to 'set them free', claiming that they were 'God's creatures'.
At a cost of nearly $11.25 apiece, an unidentified group of young people purchased 300 'seconds' or 'culls' from the New Meadows Lobster Pound in Portland, Maine.
"We told them they're going to get caught again and they said, 'That's OK. We just want them to have a chance before they get caught again,"' McAleney said. "I don't know if they go around and free chickens and cows or what."
This comes at a time when lobster is retailing for nearly $15 per pound, due to recent poor weather, cold water, and stocking issues in local lobster ponds.
The identities of the lobster liberators remain a mystery.
