"Stealth" Gonorrhea Strains on the Rise

By ckloeckner     Apr 9, 2007 in Health
There is a type of Gonorrhea on the rise that lacks an enzyme which most kits use for a diagnosis.
The enzyme — called prolyliminopeptidase — was previously thought to be common to all gonorrheal strains and its absence can result in incorrect, doubtful, or delayed diagnosis, they point out.
Dr. Unemo who works in a hospital in Sweden investigates the possibility of a "widespread transmission" of this type of Gonorrhea in several countries.
This strain has been identified in Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland, and were undistinguishable or related to a strain previously reported.
worldwide awareness of this strain is critical to better diagnose patients and better select treatments.
