article imageMore excitement in Cricket World Cup 2007

Guyana was the host of three thrilling upset the current Cricket World Cup has produced. I was there and witnessed 2 of the 3 upsets - Sri Lanka vs. South Africa and Sri Lanka vs. West Indies or as the fans in the Caribbean puts it the "waste in these"
They say the most exciting thing one can be is spontaneous; such was my trip to Guyana, which came about on my husband’s hard work. We landed in Guyana the morning of the day the teams begun to arrive in Guyana. All of the teams except the Irish stayed at the Le Meridien in Georgetown. It was cricket frenzy for all the fans. They flocked the hotel just to get a glimpse of the men they worship on TV.
It was Sri Lanka's first time in Guyana. I witnessed both of their matches there. I am West Indian but I support Sri Lanka. The first match I was fortunate to see Lasith Malinga take what is known in the cricketing world as a "helmet" = 4 wickets in 4 balls. It feels good to say I was there I witnessed it and lost my voice chanting "Sri Lanka! Sri Lanka". His performance almost brought the game home for Sri Lanka but the fifth ball touched the wicket and did not dislodge the bales - it was not meant to be. To all the fans though, in their minds, Sri Lanka won. No one spoke of Robin Petersen hitting the winning runs for South Africa.
Then yet another upset which involved the favoured Sri Lanka was the win against host nation, the West Indies. The WI couldn't stand up to the much disciplined Sri Lankan line up, and succumbed to a more than 100 run defeat. Again I am happy I was cheering for Sri Lanka. Sitting in a stand where I was probably the only West Indian who was shouting "c'mon Sri Lanka" and four rows up was the father of Ramnaresh Sarwan! It felt great to be supporting a team so disciplined and humble! Go Sri Lanka!
And I wished I was there in Antigua to witness the victory over England!
