A researcher against all odds
It was not only the beauty of plants that caught Percy Julian’s attention but even their ability to produce chemicals. In the 1930s Julian started conducting his research of the natural characteristics plants and basic carbon element which forms an important component in organic chemistry. His hard work generated knew medicines that can help millions of people.
Percy Julian grew up in Alabama in the 1920s, an excellent black chemistry researcher whose life and success in USA was characterized by race discrimination. He became a very successful researcher in organic chemistry but was forced to take a long way via Europe to get higher education to be able to further his research. Back in the USA he became very successful and behind the production of many important medicines like for ex. against glaucoma, an eye sickness. He researched in different methods of producing different kinds of synthetic hormones like progesterone, oestrogen, testosterone and cortisone.
