Christians across the world marked the beginning of Easter celebrations with the ritual feet washing ceremony symbolising the last supper of Jesus Christ.
In Bethleham the traditional ceremonies taken place which start a day before his crucifixion when he washed the feet of his 12 apostles.
In ancient times sandals were the only foot wear. There is a custom that a host would provide water for guests to wash their feet. They believe that this represent the humility of jesus which should be an inspiration for all.
"In Rome, Pope Benedict washed the feet of 12 laymen during a Holy Thursday service.
The pontiff, who turns 80 this month, was making one of several Holy Week appearances."
The celebrations will culminate with a mass at St Peter's Square in the Vatican.
