Is Cheerleading too dangerous?

By Leah     Apr 3, 2007 in Lifestyle
Do high-flying routines in cheerleading come with too high a risk?
I used to be a cheerleader, and now my daughter is one as well. We didn't have a lot of injuries that were serious, but looking back, some of them could have been.
Are coaches expecting too much? Are they putting lives in danger just to win a competition?? I do believe if you get a good coach, they will not put you in danger. Unfortunately, one of the girls in this video didn't have a coach who had her safety in mind, and now she is paralyzed.
I pay attention to what my daughter is doing in cheerleading, and I ask questions. I feel it is important parents are involved, and that they ask questions on safety if they are concerned.
There are many precautions that can be taken to prevent unnecessary injury to these young people. Spotters are a big plus. Spotters in case some of you don't know, and the other cheerleaders who are there to catch you if you should perhaps fall.
I believe cheerleading is a great sport, but with any other there is risk of injury!!
