A research institue study states scientists in the Netherlands are trying to develop 'skinny' food that will help you lose weight by eating less.
This seems like common sense--eat less food and you will lose weight. Dutch scientists are taking this approach one step further by trying to develop a generation of food ingredients that will make you eat less.
The foods made with these ingredients are supposed to send 'trigger's' to your brain so people think they have had enough to eat. These researchers say this food will taste good and meet your daily dietary requirements.
Professor Robert-Jan Brummer, program director at the Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TIFN), hopes these food ingredients will be able to be used in foods from drinks to spreads and bread.
Eventhough scientists around the world are working on similar ideas that Brummer's team is working on, no one has been able to come up with that 'magic bullet' ingredient that will make your brain think you are full when eating. However, Brummer is optimistic that a break through will be made within the next 5 years or so.
Brummer said his institute is also trying to develop ingredients that will raise a person's insulin level to prevent obese people from developing diabetes, and they are also looking to develop dietary ingredients that will lower a person's blood pressure.
The TIFN has invented ingredients that can keep bread crust crispy for longer and a technology that lowers the total fat content in foods without compromising the taste.
Brummer said his institute was one of the first in the world to prove that folic acid vitamins can improve brain function and hearing in elderly people.
With obesity growing at an alarming rate worldwide, let's hope Brummer and his team at TIFN are sucessful in finding an ingreident that will cause people to eat less.
