Among other outlandish statements, Phyllis Schlafly says that married woman shouldn't be allowed to refuse sexual activity!
Phyllis Schlafly gained fame during the 1980's for campaign against the Equal Rights Amendment, and since then has continued to push for reactionary ideas that fell out of favor long ago. Why media outlets continue to give her attention baffles me.
Her recent speech at Bates College, from the article cited, seems to be more of the same of "oh, feminism is bad, women who work outside the home are bad," all that stuff. She also apparently berated men who are intelligent, which suggests that her idea of an attractive man is either a thuggish brute, or Beavis and Butthead. She really crossed the line, however, when she uttered the comment:
"By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape".
Wow. This is just... I'm lost for words. I think her comment and the evil behind it are self-explanatory.
The thing I still wonder is this; do the colleges that invite her to speak at their events know who this creepy woman is? Institutions of higher education have usually emphasised programs to help women protect themselves against assult, including sexual assaults. And yet, the words of this Schalfly woman are doing the exact opposite.
Wow, I'm still just real mad about this. I'm not female nor do I have any sisters, and at this point no daughters (or sons for that matter), but for all women out there, I hate when they are exploited and harmed in the way that Schlalfly brushes off like that. Marital rape may be less common than back in what Schlafly would have considered the "good old days", but it unfortunately still happens.
On the plus side, it is good to hear from the story that there were some people in the audience who were willing to speak truth to power, even though they may have been drowned out. But this whole story just reeks of injustice.
