Aug 24, 2007 - Sony Develops New Sugar Battery - 1 comment

In the near future, longer-lasting batteries could run on virtually anything sugary, including tree sap or flat soda.
These batteries could last 3-4 times longer than lithium ion batteries. Plus they are biodegradable. After all sugar is used as a fuel by all living things...If you have a kid you would know that...
They have now adapted certain enzymes from nature that basically strip charges from sugar and generate electricity in fuel cells. The new device combines fuel(sugar) with air and generates electricity and water as the main byproducts. Unlike other fuel cells, all the materials are biodegradable.
This is certainly a leap ahead in battery technology. Of course, nature is always the perfect model. Once again we see it put into our technology.
Fascinating stuff. Can't wait to see how far they can go with battery technology. One day we will have batteries that last years on end.
