Breaking News: Iran seizes British sailors

By Fortunesfool     Mar 23, 2007 in World
Britain's Ministry of Defence says that Iran has captured 15 British sailors.
It said that it was seeking clarification from Tehran on the specifics of the incident and that Iran's ambassador had been summoned to explain the situation.
In a statement it said:"At approximately 10:30 Iraqi time this morning, 15 British naval personnel, engaged in routine boarding operations of merchant shipping in Iraqi territorial waters ... were seized by Iranian naval vessels. The British government is demanding the immediate and safe return of our people and equipment."
No signs of fighting were reported in what has been called possibly a 'simple mistake'. The men were based on the HMS Cornwall and frigates commander, "Commodore Nick Lambert, said "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they [British personnel] were in Iraqi territorial waters. Equally, the Iranians may claim they were in Iranian territorial waters."(
Iran has yet to comment.
