Anderson, a small town in Alaska is offering to give away 26 1.3acre lots of land for free. The idea came from Daryl Frisbie's Social Studies class when they were exploring ways to boost the dwindling population.
They created a website and did powerpoint presentations and then presented their idea to City Council who decided to give it a try. The lots will be awarded to the first people to send a $500 refundable deposit. The catch is they have to build at least a 1000 square foot home within a 2 year time frame. City clerk Nancy Hollis says those that show up and stand in line have a better shot than those that forward requests via snail mail.
One person who plans on being in that line up is 15 year old student Brittany Warner who worked on the project. Her family moved to Anderson 2 months ago from Idaho when her father got a job at Clear Air Force Station. They currently rent a property and already have a house design planned.
The community is reportedly "very nice, small, very outdoorsy" you do however have to travel at least 20 miles for gas and groceries. Locals are hoping to attract people with families and who bring with them small businesses.
And just in case you don't think the free land is incentive enough to make you move there you'll also enjoy "no property taxes, state income taxes or sales tax, virtually no crime, and no traffic. There are magnificent summers with temperatures as high as 90 degrees and plenty of wide-open space".
