When it comes to walking the walk and not just talking the talk, Jeremy Staat, former college roommate of Pat Tillman, will be heading to Iraq.
Jeremy Staat was a former NFL defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams. However, much like his friend, and college roommate, Pat Tillman; Jeremy is not just saying he supports the troops;he is joining them.
Much like Pat Tillman, Jeremy Staat was motivated to join the military after the September 11,2001 attacks. However, Tillman advised Staat to stay in the NFL until Staat qualified for the NFL's retirement benefit package.
"The way I look at it, we're spreading freedom, and you have to support the troops and you have to support the war," Staat, 29, told KITV in Honolulu on Tuesday as he prepared to leave from Hawaii. "You can't just tell some Marine who just lost his buddy that we supported you but not the war, because in that case you're basically saying that Marine, his buddy, just died for nothing. We're one team."
Staat is a Lance Cpl in the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment based in Hawaii. His unit is expected to be deployed to Iraq for 7 months.
