Canada's Finance Minster Tables New Budget
Canada's Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says that today's federal budget is designed to redress Canada's provincial fiscal imbalance. The budge is expected to be heavy on tax cuts and according to the Finance Minster, it will be difficult for the opposition parties to oppose.
the Tories are in a minority in the Federal government and if the budget is voted down a new election will need to be called.
The two major Federal parties, the Liberal and Conservatives are very close in the polls with the Green part gaining strength and the NDP holding on.
The budget may contain a resolution to a highly contentious issue, The budget's centrepiece is expected to be a resolution of what is often called the provincial fiscal imbalance .
The provinces and territories receive up to $3.5 billion in additional annual transfers. these funds are designed to assist them to pay for health care, post-secondary education and infrastructure.
It could be politically dangerous for any party to oppose the budget's new plan to address the regional inequities.
