Is It OK For Michael Moore To Lie To Make His Point? OP/ED

By Pamela Jean     Mar 18, 2007 in Politics
Michael Moore has been pointed out in a recent documentary entitled "Manufactured Dissent" as a liar, a cheat and a con. Is it OK to cover up the facts, edit interviews and put your own "spin" on the truth in the name of politics?
A recent documentary, released on March 10th of this year, has exposed Michael Moore as a dishonest and deceitful filmmaker.
The husband and wife team of Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine had initially intended to make a documentary about Michael, showing him in the light as an accomplished documentary filmmaker. Being self professed left wing liberals themselves, they had long admired, and longed to emulate, Mr. Moore.
What started as a film touting the wonders of Mr. Moore took a decidedly different direction following the discoveries, pain and insult the team experienced while attempting to follow, interview and document Mr. Moore's comings and goings.
“As investigative journalists we always thought we could look at anything we wanted,” Caine said. “But when we turned the cameras on one of the leading figures in our own industry, the people we wanted to talk to were like: ‘What are you doing? Why are you throwing stones at the parade leader?’”
The duo, along with their crew, spent 2 years, beginning in 2004, following Mr. Moore and his entourage as they travelled across the US on college tours discussing the merits of his “Fahrenheit 9/11” documentary.
Visiting various locations and attempting to obtain exclusive interviews with Michael proved to be a daunting challenge.
The film shows Melnyk repeatedly approaching Moore for an interview and being rejected; members of Moore’s team also kick the couple out of the audience at one of his speeches, saying they weren’t allowed to be shooting there.
Undaunted, the crew continued on in an attempt to find the truth about Mr. Moore, and the reality of his award winning documentaries. Their investigations shed new light on several scenes depicted in "Fahrenheit 9/11" one of which is the fact that a scene in which President George W. Bush greets “the haves, and the have-mores” actually took place at the annual Al Smith Dinner, where politicians traditionally make sport of themselves.
Or, the fact that in his 1989 debut, “Roger & Me.” which largely revolved around Moore’s fruitless attempts to interview Roger Smith, then the chairman of General Motors, after his company closed plants in Moore’s birthplace, Flint, Michigan, was false, and that in actuality, Moore had spoken with then-General Motors chairman Roger Smith, but chose to withhold that footage from the final cut.
Or, the fact that In Bowling for Columbine, a scathing indictment of US gun violence, Moore had visited Toronto to show parts of the city that were supposedly so free of crime that everyone left their front doors unlocked.
“In the film, Michael makes it look as though 100% of the doors were unlocked, but his local producer told us it was really only 40%,” said Caine.
The examples shown in the film exposed Michael as a documentary film maker that did not, in fact, expose the truth of the subject matter he chose to undertake. He instead, carefully "twisted" the facts, and omitted and carefully edited the truth to substantiate his own belief system.
Attempts to contact Mr. Moore proved fruitless. Busy working on his upcoming expose entitled "Sicko" - a documentary on the American health care system, Michael apparently could not find the time to address this film.
"There's no point for Michael to respond to the film because then it gives it publicity," Melynk said.
Although this documentary would appear to deserve attention, as of yet, it remains in the shadows.
I was only made aware of it's existence by a 2 minute fluff story on Fox News early this morning.
Had this been Ann Coulter, or anyone else well known on the "Right", I am certain that all of the news feeds would be flooded with commentaries regarding this documentary.
But the media, being the leftist biased animal that it is, chooses to ignore truth and facts - even when they are hand delivered and placed at their feet - instead turning a blind eye and looking the other way.
Has anyone else out there heard anything about this documentary prior to reading this post? This film "Manufactuing Dissent" premiered on March 10 at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. That is over a week ago..............
My guess is - Not.
Michael Moore is an opportunist, lying jerk that has misled and fooled the public, all the while thickly lining his own pockets with ill gotten gains!
