Who Owns Spider-Man?
by paigemom.
Stan Lee Media has filed a lawsuit against Marvel Comics for the rights to Spider-Man. Lee is no longer affiliated with the internet company, and calls the suit "baseless."
Stan Lee Inc. claims Lee signed away his rights to Spider-Man in 1998 in exchange for company stock and a salary. Lee and Marvel Comics dispute this. Marvel Comics is the primary distributor of Lee's other famous comic book characters including the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk and the Fantastic Four.
In the lawsuit, Stan Lee Inc. also claims the agreement "entitles Stan Lee Media to a 50% cut of the profits made by Marvel from licensing comic book characters to the film industry. " Lee refers to the executives of Stan Lee Inc. as "rogue opportunists." Lee, 84, saw an upswing in his popularity last year when the Sci-Fi Channel ran the series "Who Wants to be the Next Superhero?" which Lee hosted.
What the...? I mean really, what the...? The man is 84 years old and an undisputed icon of the comic book genre. There is no way this idiot company, connected to Lee in name only, is going to win this.
