Pet owners throughout the U.S. and Canada got quite a scare as pet food is blamed for dog and cat deaths.
Retailers like PetSmart, WalMart, Safeway and Albertsons are scrambling to remove from store shelves all of the 46 brands included in this week's recall. More than 60 million pouches and cans of "gravy-style wet food" made by a Canadian pet food manufacturer were affected, causing outrage among animals lovers.
First news of the recall hit Friday night, after an unknown number of pet owners complained that their pets were experiencing vomiting and kidney failure after eating the food. But no one knew which brands were affected until Saturday morning when Menu Foods released a list of the potentially deadly products.
"The vet told us to buy her her favorite food, but I'm going to call the vet right now," Silviene Grzybowski said, looking at a flier Petsmart posted about the recall.
Menu Foods supplies pet food to 17 of the top 20 retailers in North America, and it is also produces pet food for Proctor and Gamble, Inc.
A complete list of the affected items including names and descriptions is available at the Menu Foods Web site —
