In the world's climbing costs for basic living in the richer countries, there is only one thing left a German church can do
In one monastery, the cost of up keep has gone just gone too far for the old fashioned wooden collection box to still keep it's day job. In a shocking revelation, a church has decided to install machines to accept debit and credit cards, for the more generous members of the congregation.
This humble, simple Benedictine monastery and church at Schaeftlarn has said that they wanted to make donations easier (and also bigger) and that many visitors wanted to donate, but often had no cash on them." I don't suppose they realised that this discovery might have been an excuse.
Payments, would you believe, go straight into the monks' bank account (they have a bank account?) as soon as the PIN code and amount is typed in, what could be more easy? Making a donation is just like going into a supermarket for your weekly shop.
A spokesman for the monks said: "We do not offer donors absolvence for sins, or even a candle, but they do get a receipt for the taxman." Well, if that isn't an official declaration that we are in fact, living in the 21st Century then I don't know what is.
"The other advantage is the electronic collection box is unlikely to be broken into, so can be in use day and night."
It gives a whole new meaning to 24 hour banking.
