Man beaten to death because he passes on buying a stranger's religious CD.
For details of the attack, please see Brandigal's post from yesterday entitled Elderly Man Beaten to Death on N.J. Turnpike. This is an update to her post.
The 75-year-old victim was identified as Michail J. Makarenko who lived in Hillsboro, Virginia. Mr. Makarenko spent 11 years in a Russian prison for anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda. His crime? He owned an art gallery where he exhibited works of banned artists. Mr. Makarenko has lived in the United States for the last 25 years.
Several witnesses at the rest stop where the attack occurred, say that Brian K. White, 26, approached Mr. Makarenko and asked him to buy a religious CD. When Mr. Makarenko said he wasn't interested, White picked up a rock and hit Makarenko in the head several times before jumping into his car and driving away.
Mr. Makarenko's secretary and interpreter, Gregory Burnside, said that he had gone into the washroom and when he came back out, Mr. Makarenko was lying on the group, surrounded by a group of people.
Mr. Burnside rushed to his side, read him the Lord's Prayer in Russian and prayed with him. But Makarenko, who had a hole in his skull, was not able to speak. By the time a medical helicopter could get to the scene, Mr. Makarenko had died. Mr. Burnside said one person who knew Makarenko said "he died a martyr's death _ he was stoned".
