Conservation groups urge China to maintain the ban on selling tiger hides and bones. The tiger is endangered and any softening of current ban could be disastrous for the tiger.
The world conservation union and the world wildlife Federation’s wildlife monitoring project TRAFFIC stated that there was some concern that Chinese officials would give in to pressure from business concerns that would profit from a revived trade in tiger parts. There may be only 5,000 to 7,000 tigers remaining in the wild. The largest population is in India.
The ban was introduced in 1993 and has nearly eliminated the world’s largest market for the traditional medicines which are made from tiger parts. A lifting of the ban would encourage renewed trade and thus have a major impact on the remaining tiger population.
