Joseph Kony has waged war against the Ugandan government for almost two decades. Here is a profile of this founder of the Lord's Resistance Army.
With all that has been written lately concerning the use of child soldiers by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army, I became interested in knowing more about this movement. As I researched this matter for my own benefit, I thought perhaps others would like to read about it, too. Here is a brief profile of the movement's founder, Joseph Kony.
Joseph Kony is a former Catholic altar boy from northern Uganda. He wants Uganda to be ruled according to the Biblical ten commandments.
Kony is thought to be the cousin of Alice Lakwena, a former prostitute who started the Holy Spirit Movement in 1986. This group was supposed to represent the Acholi people who felt disenfranchised after the overthrow of the northern leader Milton Obote by President Yoweri Museveni.
Ms. Lakwena promised her followers that they would be immune from the Ugandan army's bullets. This was not to be, of course, and after Museveni's troops defeated her, she fled to Kenya.
Subsequently, Kony founded his own rebel group. He is thought to have at least 60 wives.
Kony's army abducts children and teaches them to kill and commit atrocities. Those who have managed to escape say that Kony would tell them he was acting in accordance with instructions he received from the Holy Spirit and that he would often preach in tongues.
Kony once said: "I will communicate with Museveni through the holy spirits and not through the telephone."
He has cultivated an aura of mysticism and invented strict rules and rituals. He has told his troops to make the sign of the cross in oil across their chests and on their foreheads, on each shoulder and on their guns. The oil is supposed to contain the power of the Holy Spirit.
Kony believes he is supposed to "cleanse" the Acholi people. However he kills the Acholi people who don't support him.
