French Parliament switches 1,154 computers to Ubuntu Linux Operating System from Proprietary software.
The French Parliament looks to be the next big Ubuntu switcher according to reports.
Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. It is developed by a large community and has more 16,000 free programs that range from standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to web server software and programming tools.
The French Parliament decided to switch to Ubuntu operating system officially and produced a government report that recommended the use of free software overproprietary software. A Government study said that the switch to free software will provide a substantial savings to the tax payers.
After the French Parliament suggested the recommendations, two companies Linagora and Unilog have been selected to provide the members of Parliament and their assistants new computers containing Ubuntu operating system. A total of 1,154 new computers with Ubuntu will be installed before the start of the next Parliament session in June 2007.
