Winnipeg police furious man gets one day in jail after allegedly trying to stab officer

by Leah.
Winnipeg police are outraged a man they say tried to stab an officer in the head with a large knife was given a one-day jail sentence and $750 fine
Elvis Turtle, 23, told court he was simply trying to surrender his knife to police and never attempted to attack the officer. He pleaded guilty to reduced charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.

Police say they are coming under increasing attack from the public and don't believe the courts are properly protecting them.

As I read this article, I got that this isn't a teen who has had previous problems, but a scared teen fighting with a girlfriend?

I know there are crooked cops, but it seems they have been having a heck of a time lately with crime, and being singled out.

Provincial Court Judge Charles Newcombe said he didn't want to keep the young man behind bars any longer after hearing he's trying to upgrade his education and has no prior criminal record. Newcombe also didn't impose any probation.

Police Chief Jack Ewatski said he was stunned by the sentence.

“I can tell you that we feel that this sentence does not truly reflect the seriousness of this crime and does not send a message of support to police officers.”
