Former Russian UN official convicted

By sibananda     Mar 8, 2007 in World
A former Russian Diplomat who once chaired the powerful United Nations' budget oversight committee was involved with a UN procurement officer to launder thousands of dollars from foreign companies those seeking UN contracts.
Vladimir Kuznetsov, 49, was convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering by a jury in US District Court in Manhattan. An internal investigation of UN procurement office charged Alexander Yakovlev of bribery and money laundering along with Kuznetsov in 2005.Both men face up to twenty years in prison.
As part of a cooperation deal, Yakovlev had admitted accepting nearly USD one million in bribes from UN contractors. He testified against Kuznetsov. Yakovlev was involved in supplying confidential information to foreign UN contractors and companies. Kofi Annan ,the former UN Secretary-General had waived Kuznetsov's immunity at the request of US authorities.
Corruption in UN is a matter of shame for both the officials and bringing a shame to their country. It is the money to be used for betterment of poor nations not for personal benefit.
