Contrary to popular belief, studies are claiming that polycarbonate water bottles could be more harmful to your health due to chemical Bisphenol A.
This previous article explains why plastic water bottles shouldn't be reused because chemicals leak from the plastic overtime, especially since the manufacturers intend the bottles to be used only once.
However, studies are finding that Bisphenol A, a chemical that mimics estrogen is causing hormonal diseases such as breast cancer and prostate cancer as well as body development and sperm count. This chemical is used in plastic products labelled 7 (this includes polycarbonate Nalgene bottles) because it is a sturdy glass-like compound. It also reduces the metallic taste and is part of the coating within tin cans. However, Bisphenol A can easily dissolve and leak into foods because the chemical bonds holding them together are very weak.
The level of Bisphenol A found in products in the USA was on average 4 times higher than that of Europe. Keep in mind that most Canadian products originate from the same source. This chemical was on the top of the list for reinspection under a policy the Harper government announced last year to re test chemicals that never underwent complete safety assessments.
So.. I'm pretty worried because I drink from polycarbonate bottles all the time!!!! who knew they were actually more harmful than the disposable plastic bottles?
