The night before the International Olympic Committee was due to arrive in Vancouver to see the progress in the 2010 Olympics, the Olympic Flag was stolen from the front of Vancouver's City Hall.
The 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver has not been met with open arms by many. The fact that the flag was taken just before the IOC was to be in town have many speculating that it was done by protesters.
After the ceremony last month unveiling a special countdown clock to the Olympics was revealed it attracted many protesters, including one that stormed the stage. The clock is now under 24 hour watch, adding more cost to taxpayers who already feel that the money spent for the Olympic games could be better spent.
The fact that the Olympics will bring in a great deal of revenue for the city, as well as the surrounding cities doesn't seem to have any impact on those that feel that it isn't worth having the games here. The upgrades to facilities will also be here long after the games are gone.
It seems to be very much the same situation as what happened during the 1986 Expo. Many were attracted to the beautiful city we live in and in turn the property values went sky high.
I believe that with the right incentive the 2010 Olympics could be of benefit to the general public of Vancouver, and there does need to be people actively lobbying to make sure that happens. This being done by illegal activities is not the way to get anyone's point across.
