George Michael will officialy open the new Wembley Stadium with his concert on June 9, 2007. Rock group Muse would follow this performance and will be the first music band to play at the new stadium on June 16.
Singer George Michael is to play the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium, it has been announced. The pop star will perform at the 90,000 capacity venue on 9 June as part of his British and European stadium tour. Michael, 43, played several key gigs at the old stadium, including Live Aid in 1985 and Wham's farewell concert in 1986 with ex-band mate Andrew Ridgeley.
Alex Horne managing director of Wembley Stadium said it is fantastic news that George Michael will perform the first concert at the new venue. he has performed before at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid Campaign and also with his former group Wham. Alex Horne said, this will put the Wembley Stadium back into the world map as a premier music destination.
Rock group Muse would follow this performance and will be the first music band to play at the new stadium on June 16. Last year, Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams and the Rolling Stones changed venues after delays to the stadium's opening.
The £757m venue was due to reopen in August 2005, but a series of hold-ups led to a number of musical and sporting events being postponed.
The first event however would be a sports event, Wembley is expected to open with the FA Cup final on 19 May.
Wembley Stadium is a great stadium, Football team Manchester United plays there. It was considered before one of the top stadiums in the world and I am sure the new one will be as good. Only thing, why would they invite George Michael as the first act, the last few years he hasn't done anything good to have this opportunity. I think Wembley is giving him an opportunity because he was good to them in Live Aid and other Wham concerts. Hope he lives up to his billing in the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium.
