This isn't the first time wearing anything on your head for religious reasons has made the news. Isn't it time to rethink some rules in our multicultural society?
Last week an 11 year old soccer player was told to take off her hijab or leave the game. The details of that are posted here.
FIFA backed that decision in a ruling last week, and stood by the decision that wearing any type of head wear, religious or not is not allowed by the players. They are looking for a certain standard, and this just doesn't fit what they want.
A few years ago, the same argument was made by members of the RCMP. The end result is that the members are able to wear religious head wear.
Why not is my question? I can understand in a game where it would prevent one from wearing preventive gear, but in this case it is for all the wrong reasons.
Living in Canada where there is such a diverse multicultural culture, this is the type of situation that keeps us moving forward and accepting this is what our culture is about.
The family isn't giving up on this case, and says that they will keep fighting for what they feel is right. I also give credit to the coach who withdrew the team when the girl was forced out of the tournament.
Is Canada moving forward in the issues surrounding multiculturalism or moving backwards?
