US Army Secretary Francis Harvey has resigned amid a row over the treatment of wounded US soldiers.
Mr Harvey who was appointed in November 2004 had given his resignation and this was announced by Secretary Robert Gates.
Harvey was responsible for the efficient functioning of the US Army which he found was not upto the mark where soldiers were supposed to live in buildings infested with rodents and cockroaches and no good care was taken when the troops were wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq at Washington's Walter Reed hospital.
It is said that he gave his resignation a day after Maj Gen George Weightman was fired from the Army.
"I am disappointed that some in the army have not adequately appreciated the seriousness of the situation pertaining to outpatient care at Walter Reed," Mr Gates said.
"Some have shown too much defensiveness and have not shown enough focus on digging into and addressing the problems," he said.
